Income Tax Time – 2013

Many of you are now receiving T4 and T4A tax slips. The T4 slip indicates the income you received in 2012 for TA/instructorship work and T4A slips are for income from scholarships/research assistantships, including tuition fee scholarships. In addition, you will need a T2202A slip (tuition certificate) which is available for download on ROSI. You will need these slips to file income tax forms for the 2012 calendar year.

The tax deadline for filing your 2012 taxes is April 30th, 2013.

Hard copies of income tax forms are available at Canada Post offices. E-copies are downloadable from the Canada Revenue Agency (http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/formspubs/t1gnrl/on-eng.html) and probably some other sites.

DOMESTIC STUDENTS

For information on free online tax filing go to UFile.ca (http://www.ufile.ca/WhyUFile/free.asp). The Canadian Federation of Students has negotiated an agreement with UFile.ca to provide free online tax preparation to all Canadian post-secondary students.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Help from the Centre for International Experience:

2013 Tax Sessions at CIE
Individual help sessions for first-year students/ first-time filers who will be completing their first tax return for the year 2012 will be conducted in March. Service will be provided by Rotman Commerce student volunteers on a first come first served basis (no appointments will be assigned):

March 6th – 28th, 2013
1 pm – 4 pm (Monday to Friday)
at CIE (main floor)

Students who already have a file with Canada Revenue Agency (repeat filers) can make use of: www.ufile.ca (code FAY 1493)

On April 8th, 2013 at 12pm, Professor Cara Orzech of Rotman Commerce will conduct a presentation on Canadian Taxation policies and the process of filling out tax returns at the Centre for International Experience. This session is open to all international students at UofT. To register to attend this session on April 8th please email suying.hugh@utoronto.ca with “April 8th Tax Session” in the subject line.

Tax forms in your mailbox require your attention

Dear Graduate Students,

Two forms have been placed in your mailbox regarding the 2012 tax credits return. If you are/will be employed by the University as either a TA or Course Instructor these forms must be filled out. Note that the forms are double sided and require your signature on the second page. Please fill them out accordingly and return them to me at your earliest convenience, please leave them in my mailbox.

Tax Information Sessions for International Students at CIE

 

 

CIE has arranged for representatives of Canada Revenue Agency’s International Tax Services Office to conduct information sessions to explain the policy and process of filling a tax return.

 

Two (2) identical sessions will be held on Tuesday February 28th:

 

11:00am – 1:00pm and  2:00pm – 4:00pm

 

These information sessions will be held at the Centre for International Experience in Cumberland House ( 33 St. George Street) and necessary forms will be made available.

DROP DEADLINE, INCOME TAX TIME, READING WEEK

DROP DEADLINE:

The next important deadline for students is the course drop deadline
of MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2012. It is an important deadline and there
are consequences for not dropping a course(s) by this date. If you
want to drop a winter course, please drop it on ROSI and then follow with
an add/drop form, available in the mailroom and at

INCOME TAX TIME:

  April every year. It is presented by representatives from the
  federal government's Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. Watch

- Income Tax and International Students
  The ISC has arranged for representatives of Canada Customs and
  Revenue Agency?- International Tax Services Office (ITSO) to
  conduct workshops to explain the policy and process of filling
  out your tax return.  There will be four (4) identical sessions
  on the following dates with opportunities for questions and
  answers after each session:
